This mother of a gado-gado baby spends a few months along the year on the island so she and her adorable daughter - who's name is one of our ocean reefs, Soraya - can stay close to what they call home.
Soraya's father is a local diver and also good friend of Palen.
What inspires me the most about this lady is her capacity to forgive, give and share with others... Basically she is "always" in a good mood. And no matter how hard a situation turns into her life, she has the amazing ability to learn from it and make the best out of it!! Yoga, her supportive familiar environment and - above all - Buddhist meditation has helped her to overcome any difficult situation that she has gone through.
Seriously, we need to learn sooo much from people like her...
After a few years on the island, I know that you can see the grandiosity of a person by how the locals interact with her/him: Palen is one of them. She is welcome in everyone's table, the same way that she welcomes everyone in her delicious Italian inspired dinners ("of course pasta before rice!" ;))
The fruit resulting of her love towards Indonesia and its people is her daughter, Soraya. One year old now, this little person melts your heart with her smiley eyes...
SORAYA is also now the name for a Foundation born to develop a Montessori school for the little kids on Gili Air!
If you see Ibu Palen around, say hi. She will say hi back for sure with a big smile. And don't miss the opportunity of asking her where to eat the best pasta and pizza on the island. She knows the best places for sure!
